Julie Garrison is a limnologist
”After my doctoral studies, I want to see the research I had put so much time and energy into come to fruition.”
What kind of education do you have?
– PhD in marine biology from Stockholm University.
Why have you chosen to work in VA?
– I have always been interested in water, and especially the organisms that live there! Since I was 7 years old, I wanted to research the ocean and lakes. After my doctoral studies, I want to see the research I had put so much time and energy into come to fruition, but it was slow going. Then I left academia to implement research in reality, and help Sweden speed up the process of achieving environmental goals.
Tell us about the job you have today!
– Today I work with project management and research and development at Vattenresurs as a limnologist. I help with various projects against eutrophication in lakes and bays, both in Sweden and internationally. I develop new methods and improve methods that we use today. I am also responsible for sampling, which means that I ensure that our treatments work as they should.
What does a typical day look like?
– As an employee at a small company, I have many different tasks. I take and analyze water samples from our projects. I plan future treatments, write final reports for treatments that have been carried out, participate in scientific seminars, write applications for method development, and share information with stakeholders. I have also helped with office moves and purchased new furniture. Sometimes I also go out to our projects and help with the treatment.
